Amanda Azubuike becomes first Nigerian female to become a Brigadier General in the US Army

Amanda Azubuike 57, a Black military officer of Nigerian descent, has indeed made history as the first Nigerian woman to receive the honor of Brigadier General in the United States Army.

Her remarkable journey serves as a source of inspiration for women around the globe; this is particularly significant because Black women are increasingly achieving prominence in military leadership.

Born in London United Kingdom, Azubuike is of both Nigerian and Zimbabwean heritage. Her father, who is of Igbo origin, relocated to the UK at a young age to pursue law studies, where he later met her mother—a nursing student hailing from Zimbabwe.

After her parents’ marriage ended, her mother moved to the United States with Amanda and her sister; thus, Amanda ultimately became a US citizen in April 1989.

Azubuike’s academic accomplishments also encompass a Master of Professional Studies in Public Relations and Corporate Communications from Georgetown University.

Over the course of her 30-year career, she has transitioned from aviation to various strategic and leadership roles, excelling in intelligence as well as public affairs and holding senior advisory positions.
