Asamoah Gyan a former Ghanaian striker has criticized his former teammates for failing to back him up after he missed a penalty during the 2010 Olympics.
In the closing seconds of extra time during a quarterfinal matchup with Uruguay, the Black Stars were given the penalty kick.
Dominic Adiyiahs header headed for the goal was deflected by Luis Suarez giving the West Africans the opportunity to create history.

Gyan’s attempt struck the crossbar forcing a penalty shootout in which Ghana ultimately lost.
The leading scorer in his nation’s history, Asamoah Gyan responded to the criticism he received following the incident in an Instagram Live session.
He described his teammates as coward for not attempting to take the penalty when the opportunity presented itself.

“The Best man will present himself. Anybody could have taken the penalty kick when the opportunity came. Some people thought I only went to play to miss the penalty to bring shame to Ghana.
My teammates could have also taken the penalty but they were afraid due to the pressure of the moment. Everybody is scared, you are scared, you cannot.
When a bold person took the challenge and missed it, now some of you are claiming I was not the one supposed to play the boy because others wanted to take the penalty.

But am I happy those people didn’t come out and say, that it wasn’t true because I am the first penalty kicker in the team.
The fans can be the fans, they judge, they can do whatever they want and say whatever they want to say. But those there come and defend it.
Because they were scared and I was all over the place and, was known by the people, you instigated them to talk bad about me. Really?

Why did the players who complained behind closed doors didn’t come out to talk because the whole world witnessed what happened.
Some of them saying, a certain player wanted to take the penalty and I went to collect it from him, really? Then I was rather being insulted and criticized. How could they think I intentionally wanted to miss the penalty.
The fans can be the fans they have their opinion they don’t understand the things.
Sometimes you need to engage them for them to understand that this is what happened but when I was battling Malaria and I dying but was able to score for Ghana they didn’t talk.

People who die for their country, so when you don’t see it you face calamities and you will understand. When people are bashing me, they are happy so they won’t come out to talk.
They will not even try to quench the fire by telling the truth but leave me at the mercy of Ghanaians to insult me.
Cowards, let me tell you they are cowards.
