One of the most difficult experiences a human body can go through is childbirth.
However, this experience became even more remarkable for one Mexican woman who was forced to perform a C-section on herself.
She made the decision to act independently in a moment of extraordinary fortitude and resolve.
She had to figure out how to safely give birth to her child despite having no medical training and facing unfeasible circumstances.
Amazingly the mother and her child made it through the ordeal which took place in a remote area of southern Mexico in the year 2000.
The joys and heartaches of motherhood were already familiar to the mother Inés Ramírez Pérez. She tragically lost one of her eight children as a result of complications from obstructed labour.
Living in a one-room cabin in a rural village without running water electricity or adequate sanitation Pérez found herself in a dire situation when she gave birth to her ninth child.
After 12 exhausting hours of labor Pérez realized she needed to take drastic measures to save her life and the life of her unborn child because no other adults were available to help.
She knew she needed to take quick action because time was running out even though it was a difficult decision.

After performing the procedure on herself for an agonizing hour Pérez was able to deliver her baby boy.
Her tenacity and resolve were demonstrated when he began to breathe and cry but it was also a (significant) relief. This was her dream so despite all the obstacles she persisted.

In a later interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Pérez explained: “I couldn’t stand the pain anymore. And if my baby was going to die, then I decided I would have to die, too. But if he was going to grow up, I was going to see him grow up, and I was going to be with my child. I thought that God would save both our lives.”
