“We are not interested in prosecuting foreigners engaged in galamsey and fraud; we will deport them instead,” – Interior Minister reveals

In a relentless pursuit to deal with the menace of illegal mining, otherwise known as “galamsey,” the interior minister of Ghana has revealed that it is not going to prosecute any foreigner caught in the act.

According to the honorable minister, any foreigner who is caught or arrested pertaining to illegal mining will not be charged nor prosecuted. They are however going to be deported to their home country.

“We are not interested in prosecuting foreigners engaged in galamsey and fraud; we will deport them instead,” Honorable Ibrahim Muntaka told the press.

During his speech, the minister also said that he was working with all security agencies at various levels to ensure galamsey is brought to a stop.

Recently, the minister reported that his department has deported 107 foreigners who were engaged in illegal mining since he assumed office.

Illegal mining has been a dent in the environmental and economic integrity of Ghana. Most of those spearheading the operations are foreigners especially China nationals.
