On May 11, 2025, a massive explosion rocked a military camp in Djibo, a city in northern Burkina Faso. The blast, caused by an attack from the al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM, killed dozens of soldiers and civilians.
The attackers overran the camp, destroyed it completely, and set the city’s central market on fire. Reports say up to 100 people may have died, with many others injured.

The military tried to fight back, but the attackers had heavy weapons, and no air support could reach the camp in time.
JNIM also claimed they attacked another base in Sollé at the same time, killing 60 soldiers and taking weapons and vehicles.
This attack is part of growing violence in Burkina Faso, where the government is struggling to stop armed groups. The situation in Djibo and nearby areas remains tense, with fears of more attacks.
