“US cannot dictate for us if we arrest Malema or not”.- Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa

South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa has made it clear there’s no one going to make a decision for them when it comes to issues of arrest in their country.

The South African president was responding to questions surrounding Donald Trump’s call for Julius Malema’s arrest.

Recalled there was public reactions in South Africa following U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments during a May 21, 2025, meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

During the meeting, Trump questioned why Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), had not been arrested for his “K!ll the Boer” chant.

But according to the South African president, arrests about chants or songs against anyone is a sovereign issue that needs to be dealt with internally and not by a command from anyone.

He went on to state emphatically that the controversial song is a struggle song and no one can be arrested for it.

“For us, when it comes to the issues of arresting anyone for anyone, it’s a sovereign issue so it’s not a matter where we need to be instructed by anyone” the president stated
