Uganda politician builds church to “thank God” after traveling abroad to seek medical treatment; sparks controversy

Sam Kutesa, a prominent Ugandan politician and former Foreign Affairs Minister, has drawn sharp criticism after building a grand church in Uganda to “thank God” for his recovery from throat cancer, which he treated in Germany.

Kutesa, a close ally of President Yoweri Museveni, reportedly traveled to Germany for advanced cancer treatment unavailable in Uganda.

According to him, he spent 6 months in Germany after his treatment. Upon his return, he constructed a large church rather than a medical facility.

He revealed that the church was a promise he made to God for helping him come out of that “nasty experience.”

Kutesa, a prominent figure and former Foreign Affairs Minister, invited President Yoweri Museveni to the church’s opening, further amplifying public debate about priorities in Uganda’s healthcare system.

The decision has ignited public debate, with many questioning why Kutesa did not invest in a hospital to address Uganda’s strained healthcare system.
