Tempers were flaring, and viral videos captured the ugly scenes of physical confrontation among players from both sides.
Hostility was exacerbated as various considerations resented recent tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Canadian imports and remarks made by him suggesting Canada could become the 51st state.

It is one more point of contention that Trump has repeatedly mocked outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, referring to him as “Governor Trudeau.”
Trudeau was present at the arena that very night to witness the chaos of three skirmishes on the ice.
It was the second time hockey fans in Canada took to booing their American neighbors’ National Anthem in a matter of weeks, with a similar case recorded after a game involving the Ottawa Senators and the Minnesota Wild earlier this month.
With feelings so high on and off the ice, the relationship between the two nations is evidently becoming even more strained.
