Trump signs executive order to reinforce discipline in US schools

On Wednesday, Donald Trump signed a new Executive Order to enhance classroom safety and establish consistent discipline policies across schools nationwide.

This initiative aims to ensure that discipline is determined by student behavior rather than diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) considerations.

The Executive Order instructs federal education officials to develop new guidelines for schools, emphasizing fair and objective enforcement of discipline.

The administration encourages educational institutions to implement practices that do not differentiate among students based on race, advocating for uniform disciplinary measures rooted solely in behavior.

Additionally, the new policy empowers the federal government to intervene with school districts or education agencies that continue to employ race-based discipline practices, which the administration argues contravene Title VI of the Civil Rights Act prohibiting racial discrimination in federally funded programs.

Trump noted that some school systems have previously considered race in disciplinary actions to address disparities in suspension and expulsion rates.

The Executive Order mandates a report to be submitted to the White House, assessing the impact of DEI-based discipline on schools and identifying strategies to ensure that federal funding does not support any racially preferential discipline policies, including those facilitated by nonprofit organizations.

The report is anticipated to include recommended measures and insights into this important issue.
