President Donald Trump issued an executive order that led to the United States government suspending its support for HIV treatment in Nigeria and other developing countries.
The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) a vital program that offers HIV treatment in Africa and other developing nations has seen its funding disbursed cease by the US State Department.

The action is a direct result of an executive order signed by President Trump on his first day in office, which mandated that all government agencies responsible for overseeing foreign development assistance programs must suspend funding.

Consequently, nearly all US global health funding, including PEPFAR, has been immediately halted.
Depending on future events this funding freeze may last for more than ninety days.

With a $6. 55 billion yearly budget PEPFAR has treated more than 20. 6 million people with HIV/AIDS globally.
An estimated 26 million lives have been saved since its inception and it has also helped to slow the virus’s spread.

However, in light of this suspension, the US State Department has asserted that it will no longer distribute funds “blindly” without ensuring returns for the American populace.
Public health experts have voiced apprehensions that the new administration may, however, ultimately dismantle the program entirely.
