Good Friday wasn’t so good for people leaving near Madina Redco flats after a devastating fire swept through a densely populated area late on Good Friday night, April 18.
The fire broke out around 11:15 p.m., claiming the life of a young Nigerian woman named Beauty, who was believed to be in her early twenties.
The fire also destroyed over 150 wooden and metal structures that were used for both residential and commercial purposes.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as flames quickly engulfed the informal settlement, fueled by the flammable materials of the makeshift homes and shops.
The Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly, with teams from Madina, Adenta, Legon, Abelemkpe, and the Fire Service Headquarters working to combat the inferno.
After more than three hours of intense firefighting, they brought the blaze under control by 2:22 a.m. on April 19, 2025. Their efforts saved over 200 nearby structures, including the Redco flats, from being consumed by the flames.
Tragically, Beauty was unable to escape and became trapped in the fire. Her remains were later recovered and handed over to the Madina Police.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but local speculation suggests that human factors may have played a role.
