Owning two or more dogs could land you in prison – Zimbabwean city warns residents

The city of Harare in Zimbabwe has warned residents about the legal implication of keeping more than two dogs in their homes in consonance with its dog control by-laws.

Per the regulations, it is an offence to own over two dogs on properties smaller than 2,000 square meters, whereas other bigger properties are restricted to a maximum of 4 dogs.

Non-conformers of this regulation will lead to one serving a jail term or imprisonment of at least 6 months or will be subjected to a fine.

The Harare City Council has urged people living in Harare to adhere to the rules.

According to Mr Chiwawa, this forms part of measures to ensure public safety and community order.

He also admonished people in Harare to get familiar with the by-laws to prevent penalties and encourage responsible dog ownership.
