If you think relationships are hard, then try falling in love as an American diplomat stationed in China.
American diplomats in China have been reportedly given a new directive prohibiting any romantic or sexual relationships with Chinese citizens.

This policy applies to diplomats, their families, and contractors with security clearances.
Initiated in January by outgoing ambassador Nicholas Burns, this rule expands the previous restrictions, which only applied to guards and support staff at the U.S. embassy and consulate. Now, it encompasses all U.S. missions in China.

According to sources from the Associated Press, there is one exemption: U.S. personnel who already have established relationships with Chinese nationals may apply for a waiver.
However, if a waiver is denied, they will face two options: either end the relationship or resign from their position.
