Meta will Pay Prez. Donald Trump $25m for suspending his Facebook and Instagram accounts after Jan 6 riots

Meta, the parent company of social platforms like Facebook and Instagram, has settled a lawsuit presented to them by Donald Trump in 2021 after the company suspended his social media accounts following the January 6th attack on Capitol Hill.

In 2021, President Donald Trump accused Meta of censorship (and infringing upon his rights); however, the suspension of his accounts sparked considerable debate.

Although many individuals supported the decision, others perceived it as a violation of free speech.

Four years later, the involved parties have reached a settlement.

Meta announces a donation of $22 million to Trump’s presidential library, while an additional $3 million will be allocated to cover his legal fees and those of other plaintiffs in the case.

This development occurs alongside numerous changes that Meta has recently implemented, as the new administration is settling in.

The company made a $1 million donation to Trump’s inauguration; furthermore, they have recently terminated their DEI programs and are eliminating their fact-checking system in favour of community notes, akin to those found on X.

However, these shifts have raised questions about the implications for content moderation and accountability.
