The eye of an acid attack victim has been saved by a donated placenta.
Paul Laskey, 43, was squirted with corrosive battery acid on his face after his son, aged 16, was mugged at knifepoint.

His left eye melted after the attack, and his sight was recovered by a life-changing medical operation using a donated placenta.
On February 5, 2023, when the plumber and heating engineer went out to nab the mugger of his son in New Castle, he was squirted in the face with corrosive acid.

Paul, who flagged a critical-care status, had his two cornea transplants from directly donated eyeballs done within a year and received ‘essential’ treatment from donated placenta.

‘I couldn’t see and couldn’t breathe. It took my breathe away with how strong it was. I felt burning on my face.” He told Metro UK.
‘I wasn’t in a lot of pain because it had burnt through all the nerves.’
Paul added: ‘It was horrendous. I was off work for the first six months. It was all that was on my mind. It was just awful.
I immediately worried that I would lose it completely, which would have upended my life.
‘I was scared that I wouldn’t be able to work, drive, play football with or go to the cinema with my kids, like I love to do.’

Doctors obtained an amnion graft from the placenta inner lining of the organ that is responsible for its support system.

This very ‘sticky’ and almost transparent material self-seals all around the eye and healed injury on the surface and closed nerve endings.

So he underwent three such procedures, the first already a week after the incident, to prevent his vision from deteriorating and stabilize the eye.
