Mali military junta hurts French asset in their country

Mali’s military junta has suspended the French broadcaster TV5 Monde “until further notice” over allegations of biased reporting.

Mali’s High Authority for Communication (HAC) announced a decision regarding the channel’s coverage of an opposition protest in Bamako, where demonstrators called for an end to the transitional government led by Lt. Col. Assimi Goita.

The HAC accused TV5 Monde of airing “biased and unbalanced” reports that included defamatory content targeting Mali’s defense and security forces while failing to present a balanced perspective on the protest.

The suspension marks the latest in a series of actions against French media outlets, following the permanent ban of France 24 and RFI in 2022 over similar accusations of bias.

Those earlier bans were linked to reports alleging abuses by the Malian army, amid growing tensions between Mali and its former colonial power, France.

On the same day as the TV5 Monde suspension, the Malian junta escalated its grip on power by dissolving all political parties and banning public gatherings.
