Judge orders Trump administration to temporarily allow funds for foreign aid to flow again

On Thursday, the Trump administration was ordered by a federal judge to temporarily lift a three-week funding freeze that has caused the U. S. pointing to the extensive harm the abrupt shutdown has caused to the non-profits and other organizations that support U. S. aid and development efforts around the world support abroad.

The court decision was the second to deal the Trump administration a significant blow in its attempt to dismantle the six-decade-old U.S. Elon Musk an ally of President Donald Trump and the Agency for International Development are accused of being at odds with Trumps agenda.

The U.S. district court in Washington made a ruling that directly addresses the abrupt halt of USAID funds for international programs, which aid groups have criticized.

Due to the funding freeze, contractors, farmers, and suppliers both in the U.S. and globally have been deprived of hundreds of millions of dollars for completed work, leading to significant job losses.

Judge Amir Ali issued this temporary order in response to a lawsuit filed by the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition and the Global Health Council.

These organizations represent health groups that rely on U.S. funds for their work abroad.

Judge Ali highlighted that the Trump administration argued the funding suspension was necessary to conduct a comprehensive review of thousands of USAID programs overseas to determine if any should be eliminated.

However, administration officials “have not offered any explanation for why a blanket suspension of all congressionally appropriated foreign aid, which set off a shockwave and upended” contracts with thousands of nonprofit groups, businesses and others “was a rational precursor to reviewing programs,” the judge said.

Lawyers for the administration had failed to show they had a “rational reason for disregarding…the countless small and large businesses that would have to shutter programs or shutter their businesses altogether,” the judge added.
