Judge blocks Trump’s birthright citizenship order

On Wednesday, February 5, a Federal Judge blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order that aimed to limit birthright citizenship in the United States.

This ruling stops Trump’s order for now, which was meant to start across the country on February 19.

In her decision, District Judge Deborah Boardman mentioned that denying birthright citizenship could cause serious harm and this is crucial because it contradicts the right of citizenship for those born on US soil, a right supported by Supreme Court decisions.

She noted that Trump’s order goes against the clear wording of the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to anyone born here.

“The denial of the precious right to citizenship will cause irreparable harm.

“No court in the country has ever endorsed the president’s interpretation,” Boardman said according to The New York Times. “This court will not be the first.”

However, this ruling follows a similar decision from a federal judge in Washington state, who had given a 14-day stay on the order back in January.
