The football community united in grief on July 5, 2025, as Liverpool FC star Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva were laid to rest.

The private funeral service was held in Jota’s hometown, Gondomar, Portugal. The service was attended by family, friends, and several football figures from around the world,

Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk, led the Liverpool team and staff to the ceremony alongside Andy Robertson.

Representatives from Jota’s former clubs, FC Porto and Wolves, as well as Portugal national team teammates, including Reuben Neves and João Felix, were also present.

Reuben Neves who was participating in the Fifa Club World Cup was one of those who carried Jota’s coffin into and out of the church during the ceremony.

Liverpool announced they will pay the full £14.6 million remaining on Jota’s contract, signed in August 2022 with a weekly wage of £140,000, to his widow, Rute Cardoso, and their three children.

The club has also retired Jota’s No. 20 shirt and plans a permanent memorial at Anfield.

Jota made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals for the club after joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020.
