FBI agents arrive in Lagos with permission to extradite any identified fraudsters (Yahoo Boys)

The situation surrounding Nigeria’s “Yahoo boys” has taken a serious turn, impacting countless individuals both locally and globally.

Recently, FBI agents have arrived in Lagos, equipped with the necessary legal authority to arrest and potentially extradite cybercriminals involved in sextortion and fraud.

This initiative, known as Operation Artemis, is a collaborative effort with Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) aimed at addressing fraud crimes have already arrested 22 suspects.

The FBI’s efforts are particularly focused on those behind business email compromises, romance scams, and sextortion schemes—crimes that have resulted in devastating outcomes, including the tragic loss of lives.

The longstanding extradition treaty from 1931 between the U.S. and Nigeria facilitates this collaboration, empowering the FBI to bring suspects to the U.S. for prosecution.

According to reports from Premium Times Nigeria and BBC News Pidgin, this operation is being conducted with a sense of urgency and empathy.

Agents are actively working from the FBI’s legal attaché office in Lagos, committed to tracking down those responsible and providing some measure of relief to the victims affected by these crimes.
