Europe’s tallest active volcano, Mount Etna, erupted on Monday. It is noted as one of its most significant eruptions since 2014.
The event, captured in a series of vivid images and videos, saw a massive ash column rise several kilometers into the sky, accompanied by lava flows and pyroclastic activity.

Approximately 40 individuals, who were on the mountain at the time, were evacuated safely, thanks to the quick response of local guides and authorities.
Footages shared on social media showed the urgency of the situation, with people running and even skiing down the slopes to escape the advancing ash and lava.
Mount Etna is known for its frequent but typically less severe eruptions. It has a long history of volcanic activity dating back thousands of years.
This recent eruption stands out due to its scale and the presence of tourists. Tourists and guides were forced to flee the volcano as the eruption unfolded unexpectedly.

Authorities have since issued warnings advising against visiting the area due to ongoing volcanic activity and the risk of further eruptions.
Earlier this year, authorities noted seismic activities around the area. They also recorded an increase in temperature in the area and issued a yellow alert.
Volcanic tremors were later reported in March which suggested deep magma movement. Scientists became alert after gas emissions were seen coming out of the Volcano later that month.

Despite the intensity of the eruption, officials reported no immediate danger to the broader population. Operations at Vincenzo Bellini Catania Airport were unaffected as the ash cloud moved westward. The area has however been marked red alert for aviation activities.
