According to Afr.com, a consortium of investors led by billionaire Elon Musk is reportedly offering $US97.4 billion ($155 billion) to buy the nonprofit that controls artificial intelligence start-up OpenAI, in a move that was quickly rejected by its chief executive Sam Altman.

The offer – reported by the Wall Street Journal – intensifies a longstanding battle between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Musk over the future of the start-up at the heart of a boom in generative AI technology.

Musk’s attorney, Marc Toberoff, said he submitted the bid to OpenAI’s board on Monday, according to the report.

“It’s time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was,” the WSJ cited Musk as saying in a statement provided by Mr Toberoff. “We will make sure that happens.”

In response to the bid, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to X to reject the bid.

“No thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want”, says Altman

ELon Musk, who saw the post, immediately responded and wrote, “Swindler”
