Donald Trump will be sentenced on 34 Felony convictions days before Inauguration as Judge issues jail time decision

On Friday, January 10, President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to receive his sentencing for 34 felony convictions.

He will be sworn in as the 47th president of the United States in just one and a half weeks.

On Friday, Jan. 3, issued a long-awaited decision Judge Juan Merchan of New York rejected Trump’s attempt to overturn the historic guilty verdict and mandated that the president-elect show up for sentencing on Friday, January 10 either in person or virtually at 9:30 am local time.

In his decision, Juan Merchan made it clear that he has no intention of sending Trump to prison even though the charges against him carry a maximum sentence of four years.

Instead, the judge suggested, “unconditional discharge appears to be the most viable option to ensure finality and allow Defendant to pursue his appellate options.”

Since the president was first found guilty on May 30 Trump’s legal team has attempted multiple times to have the case dismissed.

Merchan had already dismissed in December one of the defenses most compelling arguments which was that a July Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity was reason to overturn the verdict.

The judge emphasized the value of respecting the trial process in his most recent decision to uphold the verdict.

“The significance of the fact that the verdict was handed down by a unanimous jury of 12 of Defendant’s peers, after trial, cannot possibly be overstated,” he wrote.

“Indeed, the sanctity of a jury verdict and the deference that must be accorded to it, is a bedrock principle in our Nation’s jurisprudence.”

The DAs office claimed that Trump was trying to conceal evidence of an illegal conspiracy to sway the 2016 election in a broader sense by fabricating the records.

It was more challenging to demonstrate that the falsified business records could be linked to Trump and charged as felonies as prosecutors mainly relied on witness testimony to illuminate the former president’s involvement and motivations.

The defence sought to cast doubt on the jurors by claiming that prosecutors’ main witness former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen could not be relied upon to speak the truth.
