By signing an executive order, US President Donald Trump formally renamed the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America and declared February 9 to be Gulf of America Day.
Trump held a news conference to announce the new honoured day and other executive order plans for the week while he was flying over the Gulf of Mexico on his way to New Orleans for the Super Bowl.

When Trump was flying over the Gulf he emphasized the significance of the renaming.
In the past, this body of water was known as “Mexican Bay” (Seno Mexicano) until the early 1800s.

The name “Gulf of Mexico” was later given by Spanish explorers because of Mexico’s extensive coastline, according to historical accounts.
