Burkina Faso under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traore has explicitly banned every homosexual activity.
On September 1, 2025, the unelected transitional parliament of Burkiba passed a bill that criminalizes homosexual acts.

The bill is part of the country’s move to combat homosexuality and same sex relationships in the region which is ok the rise.
This new legislation is part of the country’s newly amended family code that was drafted and adopted by the cabinet just over a year ago.

This new law passed by the current transitional parliament bans homosexuality and homosexual acts.
Defaulters of this new legislation will face penalties which includes fines and at least 5 years imprisonment.

Justice Minister Edasso Rodrigue Bayala announced on state-run media that, “the law provides for a prison sentence of between two and five years as well as fines”.
According to him, foreign nationals caught breaking the law would also be arrested and deported to their home countries.
The measure is part of extensive reforms to family and citizenship laws. It represents a significant change for human rights in the West African nation, where homosexuality was legal until the junta took power following two coups in 2022.

In 2024, neighboring Mali enacted a similar law. More than 30 countries across Africa now prohibit same-sex relations. Ghana and Uganda have also strengthened their anti-homosexuality laws in recent years despite facing global criticism.
