“In Burkina Faso civilians sleep at every roundabout at night just to protect their president,” the blogger wrote on his page.

This news comes after recent threats and several assassination attempts on the life of Ibrahim Traore who has been President since he overthrew the democratic government via coup in September 2022.

The young leader, who overthrew the previous democratic government, has become a polarizing figure, celebrated by supporters for his anti-imperialist stance and ambitious reforms, yet targeted by adversaries seeking to destabilize his regime.

Ibrahim has currently survived over 18 assassination attacks, most of which are backed by leaders from the Western world.

In April 2025, Burkina Faso’s military junta announced it had foiled a major coup plot scheduled for April 16, allegedly masterminded from neighboring Ivory Coast.

The plan, according to Security Minister Mahamadou Sana, involved an assault on the presidency by soldiers recruited by foreign adversaries, with key plotters, including ex-army officers Major Joanny Compaoré and Lieutenant Abdramane Barry, reportedly based in Abidjan.

Another attack also involved some of Traore’s guards being paid $5 million to kill him. It however proved futile.

Traoré’s reforms, such as nationalizing gold mines, banning colonial-era judicial wigs, and prioritizing free healthcare and education, have fueled his popularity, particularly among youth, with 66% of Burkinabè accepting military rule, per Afrobarometer surveys.
