The issue came to light when Pavena Hongsakula, founder of the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women, learned about it from a victim who had returned to Thailand after escaping by paying Rs 1.8 lakh.
She revealed that other Thai women remained trapped because they couldn’t afford their freedom.

These women had been deceived by a job ad on Facebook that promised between Rs 10 lakh (11,500 euros) and Rs 15 lakh (17,000 euros) for working as surrogate mothers for Georgian couples.
The organization behind the ad arranged their travel documents, but once they arrived, the women were confined in large properties with many others.
It quickly became clear that the job offer was a scam.
During a press conference, a victim disclosed that they were given hormones to increase egg production, which were then forcibly extracted every month.
“The women would be injected to get treatment, anesthetized and their eggs would be extracted with a machine. After we got this information and it was not the same as the advertisement, we got scared, we tried to contact people back home,” thr victim said.
Ms. Pavena indicated that these eggs were likely sold internationally for in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
