Dawn Richard’s Role in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Federal Trial

Dawn Richard, a former member of the girl group Danity Kane and the musical trio Diddy – Dirty Money, has emerged as a key witness in the high-profile federal sex trafficking and racketeering trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs, which began in May 2025.

Richard, who first rose to prominence through Combs’ MTV reality show Making the Band in 2004, has accused the music mogul of sexual assault, physical abuse, and creating a toxic work environment during her nearly decade-long professional relationship with him.

Her testimony, alongside that of Combs’ former girlfriend Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, aims to corroborate allegations of a pattern of violence and coercion that prosecutors claim enabled Combs’ alleged criminal enterprise.

Richard’s involvement in the case stems from her firsthand experiences working under Combs’ Bad Boy Records label. In a 2024 lawsuit, she alleged that Combs subjected her to groping, verbal abuse, and inhumane working conditions, including sleep and food deprivation during her time with Danity Kane and Diddy – Dirty Money.

She also claimed to have witnessed Combs physically assault Ventura on multiple occasions, including a 2009 incident at his Los Angeles home where she testified that Combs attempted to strike Ventura with a skillet of eggs, kicked her while she was in a fetal position, and dragged her upstairs. Richard further recounted Combs threatening her and bandmate Kalenna Harper, warning that “people go missing” if they spoke about the incident, instilling fear that silenced her at the time.

Her testimony is pivotal for prosecutors, who argue that Combs’ alleged abusive behavior created an environment of fear that facilitated crimes like sex trafficking and forced labor. However, Combs’ defense team has challenged Richard’s credibility, pointing to her continued professional collaboration with Combs after the alleged incidents and suggesting her lawsuit, filed shortly before his 2024 arrest, may be financially motivated.

Despite these challenges, Richard’s detailed accounts, including witnessing Combs’ violent outbursts and drug use, bolster Ventura’s allegations and paint a broader picture of control and intimidation within Combs’ inner circle. As the trial progresses, Richard’s role underscores the courage of former associates stepping forward to confront a powerful figure in the music industry.
