A Mitumba trader in Gikomba Kenya, Purity Wambui Maitu has talked about her difficulties with her ex-husband, Ambrose Mutembei and accused him of taking advantage of her and ignoring their family.
A Kenyan publication reported that Wambui disclosed that she used the money from her mitumba business to build a property in Mwihoko that included a main house and six rental units and that she paid her own dowry of Ksh 40000.

She reveals that Mutembei has been collecting rent from the property for the last three years without helping to care for their three children despite her sacrifices.
When Wambui learned that Mutembei had rented out the main house without her permission the situation became more heated.

“I built the house entirely on my own and even paid my bride price out of love. Yet, he now collects rent from the house and the units while I struggle to raise our children alone,” she lamented.
She has threatened to act harshly because she is frustrated by his lack of support.
After years of what Wambui refers to as unreciprocated love and effort the couple’s relationship which she describes as informal with no legal support ended bitterly.

Though she bought the land and paid for the construction herself Wambui maintains that the property is hers.
“If I can’t get justice, then we’ll both lose. I’ll demolish the house if I have to,” she said.
