A lot of women have raised questions on what the colour of the period mean. Many wonder if they are having a healthy period or a not so healthy one.

Here, I’ll take you through the various colours women see when having their period and what each colour means but note that hormonal changes and health conditions can also affect the color and texture of period blood.

The most common period color often experienced by women are, Gray, Orange, Pink, Bright red, Brown and Black.

Black period colour

Usually, a woman gets black period colour at the start and end of her period. There’s nothing to be worried about as its a clear indication of the uterus bringing out blood that started in the uterus during previous periods. Unless it comes out with a foul smell and itches, then you should see a doctor.

Brown period colour

Having a brown discharge is the same as black discharge. It also appears at the beginning or end of a period and you should be concerned if it itches or has a foul smell

Pink period colour

A pink coloured period blood could either be an implantation bleeding or bruises during sex. It could also mean a person is anaemic, thus, the blood coming out is not in the right amount.

Bright Red period colour

Bright rred or deep red period colour is perfectly normal. That’s the normal colour of period blood.

Orange period colour

Orange blood may be caused by an infection which you’ll need to see a doctor. In rare cases, it could be normal and it’s just period blood mixed with vaginally fluids.

Gray period colour

If yyou’re experiencing gray period discharge, it is a bacterial infection. This usually comes with itching, foul smell and burning sensation when urinating.

It is important to speak to a doctor if you are further questions and if you feel something is wrong with your monthly flow.
