A health professional has adviced mothers on the dangers of feeding their kids with cornmeal porridge, locally known as Mmɔri koko.

She stated that the corn dough, when fermented for a long time before being used to make the porridge has the potential to alter the brain of the child to cause brain damage.
She said, “Did you know some cornmeal porridges can destroy the brain of a child? Some of the corn dough sold in the market is not safe to use for porridge for children as it it can alter the brain of the child to cause brain damage.”

“Fermentation can occur in some corn dough available for purchase, particularly if it has been stored for an extended period. While fermentation can be beneficial for digestion, it can also lead to the presence of alcohol in the dough.”
“Since alcohol affects brain function, using such fermented corn dough to prepare porridge for children may not be advisable. A better alternative is to source your own maize and create fresh corn dough at home for your children’s meals.”
