Russian President Putin approves new Navy Strategy to defend interests in world oceans

Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a new naval strategy on aimed at restoring Russia’s position as a leading maritime power through 2050.

The strategy, who has been made known by Kremlin aide Nikolai Patrushev, focuses on defending Russia’s interests across global oceans.

It also addresses modern threats like unmanned aerial vehicles and uncrewed boats, and countering perceived Western moves to seize Russian cargo vessels.

It includes plans for modernizing the fleet with an $100.5 billion investment over the next decade, prioritizing hypersonic weaponry, nuclear-powered submarines and surface ships.

Russia’s navy, ranked third globally behind China and the U.S., has 79 submarines and 222 warships, with its core strength in the Northern Fleet based in Severomorsk.

However, setbacks in the Ukraine conflict, including the loss of about a third of its Black Sea Fleet to Ukrainian drones and missiles, highlight challenges.

The strategy reflects Moscow’s response to NATO’s expansion and U.S. maritime influence, though specific details remain undisclosed.
