Burkina Faso names an avenue after former President J. J. Rawlings to honor ties between him and Thomas Sankara

Burkina Faso has named an avenue in Ouagadougou after Ghana’s late President Jerry Rawlings to honor his deep ties with Thomas Sankara, a revolutionary leader of Burkina Faso.

The avenue, located in the Dassasgho district near the National Museum, was dedicated alongside the Thomas Sankara Mausoleum’s inauguration on Sunday, May 18.

The inauguration was attended by a delegation from Ghana alongside the family and relatives of the late Rawlings.

Officials in Burkina stated that, the gesture serves as a tribute to Rawlings for his contribution to Pan-African growth and his support for Sankara.

“Ouagadougou, the hospitable city of intermingling peoples, is proud to dedicate one of its avenues to President Jerry John Rawlings, who was a major player in the strong friendship that unites Burkina Faso and Ghana,” said Minister of Communication Gilbert Ouédraogo

Rawlings and Sankara’s friendship, rooted in their 1980s revolutionary ideals, aimed at uniting Ghana and Burkina Faso politically and economically, a vision that faced challenges due to colonial legacies and external pressures.
