On Tuesday, Attorney General Pam Bondi, stated that she had ordered federal prosecutors to pursue the death penalty in the murder case against Luigi Mangione for killing United Health Care CEO Brian Thompson.
Pam said she had instructed Matthew Podolsky, the interim US attorney for the Southern District of New York, to pursue the death penalty if Mangione is found guilty of capital murder charges.
In a statement issued by the Department of Justice, Bondi stated;
“Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson, an innocent man and father of two young children, was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America.”
“After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again,” Pam wrote in her statement.
Mangione is facing state and federal charges for allegedly shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan in December. He has pleaded not guilty to the state charges.
Mangione was charged in a federal criminal complaint but has not yet been indicted on those charges.
