Some South Africans are calling for the removal of Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber after Chidimma Adeshina, the first runner-up in the Miss Universe 2024 pageant, was seen in Cape Town.

A viral video on the social media platform X shows Chidimma Adeshina, who holds the title of Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, at a café in Waterfront, Cape Town.

This has sparked anger among some South Africans, who are questioning how she managed to re-enter the country.

In October 2024, the Department of Home Affairs revealed they found evidence suggesting that Adeshina’s mother may have committed fraud and identity theft.

As a result, the department cancelled the IDs and travel documents of both Adeshina and her mother after they failed to comply with an order to explain why their documents shouldn’t be revoked.

Facing accusations that she wasn’t South African, Adeshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition.

Due to her roots as having a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, she became a target of xenophobic attacks.

Her predicament deteriorated when allegations of identity fraud involving her mum surfaced, prompting the Department to begin investigations on her citizenship status.

Eventually, Adeshina stepped down from the South African competition and later went on to win the Miss Nigeria beauty pageant.
